The Melanesian Institute (MI) is an ecumenical research, teaching and publishing institute, designed to help member churches speak more clearly on the needs of the people in Melanesia. It does this by studying the Melanesian cultural traditions and taking them more seriously.

Disseminating of these research materials through its annual Cultural Orientation Course in January, Workshops, Seminars and also making available these materials at a cheaper price through its publications over the last thirty nine years.

How Does Melanesian Institute Serve?


With a particular focus on Papua New Guinea, the Melanesian Institute works with churches, Non-Government Organisation, Volunteer Organisations and people in Melanesian society by means of:

» Doing research on cultural topics;
» Disseminate information from research conducted through courses, seminars and workshops on issues on culture
   and religion,
» Publications offered for sale at a cheaper price;
» Advice given to students of anthropology and cultural studies; and
» Other consultations as requested.

Staff of Melanesian Institute

Staff of the Melanesian Institute

The Research and Teaching (Faculty) staff of the Melanesian Institute are nominated by the four mainline churches (Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran and United Church of Papua New Guinea) to join the Faculty Staff of the Melanesian Institute.

From the 1st of March 2009, the Assistant Directorship of Melanesian Institute has changed from Rev Hermann Spingler to Mary Tankulu. Rev Dr William Longgar still the Director.
